Wan Gang: Fundamental solution for financial crisis relies on technological innovation

Wan Gang, China's Minister for Science and Technology, said on March 19 that during the financial crisis, the fundamental solution for revival of the global economy still lies in major breakthroughs in technological innovation.

This may be achieved by stepping up the development of a series of emerging industries, the creation of new market demand, and the fostering of new economic driving forces so as to set a new direction for social and economic development.

The 2009 China International Summit Forum on Energy Saving, Emissions Reduction and New Energy Science and Technology was held on March 19 in the Great Hall of the People. Participants included Wan Gang, Chinese Academy of Engineering President Xu Kuangdi, the International Energy Agency Deputy Executive Director Richard H. Jones, as well as renowned scientists, economists and the presidents of Fortune 500 companies.

During his speech, Wan pointed out that although there is an ongoing global financial crisis, we cannot think that pressure for energy conservation and emissions reduction has been alleviated due to the drop in energy prices and decrease in demand. Instead, the financial crisis will bring major new opportunities for global scientific, technological and economic development.

Historical experience has proved that financial crises are usually accompanied by a revolution in science and technology, and each revolution in science and technology in turn is an important engine for a new round of economic growth and prosperity.

Wan stressed that China attaches great significance to the development and application of energy-conserving, emissions-reducing, and new energy technologies. China also regards this to be a major task in transforming the model of economic development and promoting economic restructuring.

He noted that the Chinese government will intensify its efforts in scientific research, upgrade its technological strengths in the areas of energy conservation and new energy technologies, speed up the popularization and application of advanced technological products, support industry stimulus, perfect policy mechanisms, attach great significance to global climate change, promote scientific and technological innovation as well as technology transfer, and strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in science and technology.
