Hexagon Expands Its Offerings in Area of Vision Metrology

Hexagon Metrology recently acquired all of the outstanding assets and intellectual property (IP) of two German companies operating in the vision metrology industry: Mahr Multisensor GmbH and Mycrona GmbH. The acquisitions will enhance Hexagon’s global product offering in multisensor vision technology.

The metrological demand for 3D feature recognition via optical, white-light and noncontact scanning probes has been growing. Manufacturers need flexible equipment with multiple sensors in order to measure a variety of product features in one setup. This is a high-growth area in metrology, and the high-tech industries containing targeted customer groups include medical technology, electronics and micromachining.

The assets and IP acquired from Mahr Multisensor give Hexagon a complete range of optical coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for use in science and research as well as in industrial measurement applications.

Mycrona manufactures state-of-the-art 3D multisensor CMMs—a complete range for the vision industry. Each of its machines is available with camera, laser or white-light scanning sensors and with contact probe systems. In addition, the machines all come already with Hexagon’s PC-DMIS vision software.

Hexagon will integrate the acquired companies into its Metrology Vision business, which includes R&D and manufacturing facilities in Germany and China.

“With these acquisitions, Hexagon covers all aspects of the multisensor market, from fairly simple low-end systems already established via Hexagon’s subsidiary TESA to the advanced automated systems that Mahr and Mycrona represent,” says Ola Rollén, CEO and president of parent company Hexagon AB. “It also opens up the door to the nano segment of the measurement technology industry.”
