In recent years, China's economy has experienced sustainable and rapid development in machinery, building materials, electric home appliances, office supplies, electronics, and instrumentation industries, especially in automobile industry and electronic information industry. At the same time, moulds industry transfer from developed industrial countries to China has drived China’s market demands for moulds. During the twelvth five year plan, the present condition of mould output is far behind market demands will remain unchanged. There’s much potential in China moulds industry.

The fastest growing area of China’s moulds industry was in Pearl River Delta decades of years ago. However, many facts show that moulds industry growth in Yangtse River Delta has surpassed Pearl River Delta, and this will continue for a long time. Shanghai as a leading role of Yangtse River Delta, will undefinitely develop very fast.

1. Continue to promote vigorously automobile moulds. Automobile moulds should not only meet demands of automobile industry in Shanghai, but also in other provinces. In auto car production, more than 90% of auto parts such as car body, engine, interior decorations, are moulded by moulds. The rapid development of automobile industry demands for rapid development of automobile moulds industry. On the other hand, auto price become an important element in competition. In order to reduce cost, auto car manufacturers are eager to make car moulds in China. As a result, automobile moulds include plastic moulds, stamping dies, and die castings will have great development in the future.

With the growth of Shanghai Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, and Shanghai Roewe, Shanghai automobile moulds industry made great progress. The quantity of manufacturers has increased once more, enterprise scale also enlarged, so did technique. Large punched covers are the main parts of auto car body, and a key factor in auto car research. This has been a weak point of automobile moulds in our country. But now, the three companies mentioned above can produce full set of the moulds. They also did new style research. Leaded by them, Shanghai automobile moulds industry will develop step by step to satisfy demands of Shanghai automobile industry.

Meanwhile, research on automobile moulds should be made. Production, study, research should be integrated together to form a mould production network. This would promote a further more progress in mould technique, skill, lead time, and quality. 2.Develop precision stamping dies like chip dies which is a representative of precision stamping dies, meet the demands of electronics industry. Multi-position progressive die and precision stamping die, with clear features in precision and long life, are the development direction of stamping dies. As the wide spread of mobile phone, computer, and magnetic card, chip dies as one of precision stamping dies will represent the level of stamping dies.

3. Plastic moulds and stamping dies used in electronic communications, electric appliances, and building materials which are pillar industries of Shanghai will also be an important aspect of Shanghai mould development.

Of the electronic communication products, one computer model needs almost 30 sets of moulds, a colour TV needs 140 sets, 10 sets are plastic moulds. Besides, there are telecamera, VCD, DVD, digital camera, electrograph, mobile phone, CD, U disk, and so on.

In electric home appliances, 150 parts of a refrigerator need about 350 sets of moulds for production, ratio of stamping dies needed and plastic moulds is 2:1; over 500 parts of a washing machine need 200 sets of moulds, ratio of stamping dies and plastic moulds needed is about 1:2-1:3; an air conditioner needs 20 sets of plastic moulds, a microwave oven needs 100 sets of moulds.

With development of Shanghai building industry, building materials are in great needs. Demands of plastic section bar moulds and aluminium alloy section bar moulds will increase, which will lead prosperous of Shanghai mould industry.

4. Gas assisted injection moulds and high pressure injection moulding. Gas assisted injection is a new process of mould making. It has the advantages of low injection pressure, less warpage of injected products, good surface, easy form, less difference of products wall thickness. It reduces cost while ensures quality. At present, some companies in Shanghai have adopted this new technology, and received good results. For plastic products which are strong and need low speed flow, we will promote steam assisted injection molding.

5. Introduce new concept, latest technology, new process, new equipments, generalize high and useful technologies such as CAD/CAM/CAE, high speed cutting and milling, hot runner, rapid prototype, combined machining, precision machining, new materials, reverse engineering, network technique, etc..

6. Improve management skill, develop leading enterprises for each kind of moulds.
Private enterprises are the main force of mould industry, the cooresponding “familial form” has taken a great role in funds accumulation and survive. But now, this form is no longer fit to the fast development of mould industry. We have to introduce advanced management notion and system, adopt high tech management software, break the “familial form”, seek development, efficiency, and profit from management, form our enterprise culture with our own charactors. Only in this way can we creat brands and world famous brands, have leading figures and enterprises, and develop mould industry continuely, fast, and healthily.
